Trinity College North Newsletter / Edition 01 / 10 February 2012

From the Principal

Our students and teachers returned excitedly and joy-filled at the commencement of the new term, and are to be congratulated on what has been a fine opening to the school year. I trust that the holidays have provided a wealth of opportunities for families to share uninterrupted time together, and have enabled everyone to recharge and revitalise prior to the next stage of the journey we share together as members of this community.

AN ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME
We have welcomed new members of the teaching team who have joined us in various capacities:

  • Ms Adele Turner (Art)
  • Mrs Michelle Brammy (Year 7)
  • Mrs Melanie Krueger (Year 7, returning from leave)

We look forward to their fine contributions to the lives of our students and wish them every success and enjoyment of their experiences at Trinity North in the year ahead.

THE YEAR AHEAD
In terms of curriculum direction, this is an exciting year for students and teachers. Learning will centre on the implementation of the Australian Curriculum in key subject areas. Professional learning for the Teaching Team will focus on the effective delivery of this curriculum in the classroom, 21st century learning styles, ICT skills for students and staff, the newly implemented SenseAbility - Beyond Blue Pastoral Care Programme in the Middle School, catering to the needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Thinking About Thinking extension teaching strategies for all students, R -10. Close analysis of data continues to underpin professional learning directions and incorporates the continued monitoring of student performance to ensure individuals’ needs are being met throughout. Against this rapidly changing technology landscape, we are impelled to continue learning to understand both the technology and the implications of its use in terms of the interests, skills and learning styles of today’s students. Working in close partnership with parents as we navigate the learning journey for each child, will ensure outstanding rewards are reaped from each learning opportunity.

IN NEW HANDS
Our student community are also blessed with a change of leadership at the commencement of each new school year and I warmly welcome to the helm our new Executive and Pastoral Care Student Leaders for 2012. Click here for a list of our new Student Leaders. It is with great pleasure that I have commenced working with our leaders and in particular mention our Captains, Jonathan Hancock and Margot Holbert, who have already graciously undertaken key duties for our community. Our Captains will be contributing a column to the eNews, commencing in Week 4, and I look forward to their guidance and advice in support of our student community throughout 2012. I wish them great success in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities during the exhilarating journey ahead.

OPENING EVENTS
Parent Information evenings have been conducted for parents of students R-10 and I commend and thank all parents who joined us for these highly significant events in the schooling journey of your children. My congratulations to the students who so ably represented their peers on these occasions, whether it be through music, in welcome, or as assistants during the social part of the evenings. All were impeccable in their representation of our School and College, indicative of the excellence to which our students aspire. My heartfelt thanks are also extended to the Teaching Team for their exemplary organisation and professionalism, which ensured a meaningful experience for all parents in attendance.

STUDENT LEAVE OF ABSENCE
I wish to remind parents that an Application for Exemption Form A must be completed for those students who will be away during the school term for a period of 1- 4 weeks (eg: on a family holiday). This Application for Exemption Form A is required to be lodged, with your letter of request, and forwarded to me. If permission is sought for a leave of absence for a period of longer than one month, this form will be forwarded to DECS for additional authorisation. Copies of this form are available from the North Office.

Thank you for working together to ensure an outstanding start to the year. My best wishes for an exceptional term ahead.

With best wishes

From the Head of the College

Welcome!  I hope all families had a joyous Christmas.  I particularly would like to welcome new students and families to our community.

YEAR 12 RESULTS
2011 finished very strongly for Trinity College and I was delighted the hard work from our Year 12 cohort was rewarded.  Some wonderful academic results were achieved and we were particularly delighted to see the rewards that came from students who may have struggled or had to overcome adversity but still persisted.  The results are a credit to the students, their families and our terrific staff who have guided our young men and women on their journey, some of whom started at our Montessori pre-school.  To have five students receive an ATAR above 99, 36 achieve an ATAR above 90 and 239 graduate with their SACE is a wonderful achievement.  Read specific highlights here

COMMUNITY SURVEY - MOVING FORWARD
We are committed to providing the best College we can and listening to our community is a vital component of that.  Over the holiday period the College circulated an electronic survey to the community.  We received over 800 replies, which is an excellent amount of feedback.  I thank respondents for taking the time to complete this survey.  The feedback was particularly affirming in many areas but also, constructive and instructive in others.

Pleasingly, 90% of respondents said they would recommend Trinity to another family.  When compared to similar surveys in other like schools, this is a positive figure.  In the interest of transparency, I have included survey data responses to some key questions.  There are some themes that have emerged from the survey.  Parents certainly are keen for us to ensure our communication is relevant and timely.  The community encourages us to continue to offer a broad range of opportunities.  The amount of homework caused some concern and during 2012, the Director of Studies, Ian Rossotti will lead a review of this.  Parents want to ensure our fees remain as affordable as they can be.  Focus on the individual strengths of all our students is another key theme coming from comments in the survey. Survey Results.

CONGRATULATIONS
Trinity students and Trinity old scholars have recently had particular success in the world of sport.  We currently have three former students on Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarships in Canberra; Ben Warland (Soccer), Dylan Pickett (Soccer) and Amelia Schmidt (Netball).  One of our 2011 graduates, Travis Head played cricket for the SA Redbacks against Victoria and Myles Scotson has been selected in the Australian Under 19 cycling team to attend the World Championships.

Warm regards

Cyber Safety a short film called "Tagged"

Trinity North staff will continue to promote and educate our students in cyber safety, but it’s important we all educate ourselves in the responsible use of social media and the internet, as many cyber safety issues occur out of school, or at home.

Hot on the tail of the Middle School information night, we encourage you to take time to watch “Tagged” a short film for students aged 14+ developed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s (ACMA) Cybersmart program. The film illustrates a group of teenage students and the day by day devastating effects of a petty prank, the legal implications and the resulting impact on the wider group. (View “Tagged”)

We encourage all parents to take the time to watch “Tagged” and to discuss cyber safety in your home. Additional parent resources are also available from the website. If you would like further help to become a good Cyber Citizen contact the school. If your child has been the victim of or involved in a cyber safety issue and you would like to discuss this, please do not hesitate to contact Clare Clayton Trinity College North Counsellor.
